Sean Stoops

Sean returns to The Spokesman-Review and the new Comma Community Journalism Lab after most recently serving as Senior Software Engineer at O'Reilly Media, where he was the senior engineer on the team that architected and built Cloud Labs — a learning product deeply integrated with O'Reilly's broader learning ecosystem of books, live events and online training, giving learners hands-on experience in real cloud environments across Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Azure without the cost or risk of working in their own infrastructure.

Sean previously served as Online Director at The Spokesman-Review from 2017 to 2022, where he led a complete migration of the organization's web infrastructure from a self-hosted datacenter to AWS, significantly reducing operating costs while improving reliability and development velocity. Earlier in his career, Sean held roles at the Orange County Register, Las Vegas Sun, and Washington Post. He is passionate about the role local journalism plays in building informed, stronger communities and is committed to serving that mission through technology.
